Lionel Messi suspended for three months after riot & # 39; CONMEBOL & # 39; Corruption & # 39;

Asuncion: Argentina's Lionel Messi has been banned from playing for the national team for three months and fined $ 50,000 on Friday after CONMEBOL strongly criticized the board game South America during the Copa America.

The 32-year-old Barcelona attacker accused CONMEBOL of being "corrupt" after he was sent off against Chile during the third match of the tournament in Brazil, which ended last month.

Messi was outraged by two incidents during the June-July Copa hosted by arch rivals Brazil.

Argentina were denied two penalties after a 2-0 defeat to the hosts, after which Messi claimed that Brazil had more control over CONMEBOL these days. When he was badly dismissed in the next match, Argentina won 2-1, he could not control his temper.

"Corruption and referees are preventing people from enjoying the football and destroying it a little," Messi said.

He was given his marching orders after the first half of the game against Chile captain Gary Medel whose television pictures suggested he might have made a small mistake.

The CONMEBOL statement on their website did not specify why Messi should be punished but said it was related to articles 7.1 and 7.2 of the disciplinary rules. One such sentence refers to "insulting, abusive or engaging in protests of any kind."

The other article states that "breach of judgment, injunctions, or injunctions of the agency & # 39; s judiciary." The ban only means Messi will miss several friendlies as Argentina's next game is in South America until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which begins in March.

However, he has already been suspended for one match in CONMEBOL's red card against Chile, meaning he will miss the first game. Argentina had two friendlies against the United States in September against Chile and Mexico and another in October to Germany.

Messi misses all three but is free to play again in November.
